Jessie Street National Women's Library

   Donations to this organisation are tax deductible  This organisation accepts volunteer labour

The Jessie Street National Women's Library is a specialist library with its sole focus on collecting and preserving the literary and cultural heritage of Australian women.

The library was set up in 1989 and moved into its current premises in 1999.
The Library consists of a Research Collection of 8000 titles of which 3000 are unique to this library, an Archives Collection, centering around the Canberra Womens Archive but with a growing number of smaller, equally important collections and a Loan Collection which is available to members only.

The Library has a number of projects underway, some of which include;
The Tapestry Project ( endorsed by NSW Centenary of Federation Council)which encourages women from all walks of life to write stories of their own lives or that of their mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend. The purpose of this project is to record the history of 'ordinary' women as a valuable resource for the future.

The Oral History project. Trained volunteers record the lives of selected women in their own words.

Women's Studies Theses Project.We are actively seeking copies of theses presented in women's studies courses.

The Library is open 10a.m. to 3p.m. on week days and we are always willing to welcome new members and volunteers.
