Greening Australia

 This organisation accepts volunteer labour

Greening Australia (NSW) Inc (GANSW) is one of a nationwide federation of not-for-profit organisations which formed in 1982 - International Year of the Tree - to provide a practical means to address the need for large scale revegetation and management of Australia's native vegetation. Around the country Greening Australia is united by a common vision of a healthy, diverse and productive environment which is treasured by the whole community.

Each year in Australia there are sobering indications that our environment is being damaged in a way which threatens the natural systems which sustain us. Many of these indicators point to a lack of knowledge about likely future impacts and a lack of value on the natural systems.

Native vegetation - the trees, shrubs and grasses that make up our native bushland - is at the centre of these systems. Native plant communities provide the habitat for Australia's unique animal species, underpin our biodiversity, and maintain the quality of our soil, air and water. It is these systems which allow us to grow food, develop our industries and maintain the health of our people.

Here are just a few statistics which indicate that as a country we continue to take our native vegetation for granted:

 Up to 40 percent of Australias forests have been cleared since 1788;
 More than 125 species of plants are known to have become extinct since 1788;
 Until 1997 the most comprehensive survey of Australian botany was contained in Benthams Flora Australiensis, published more than 100 years ago;
 Recent surveys by the Community Biodiversity Network showed only one in 10 Australians have a practical understanding of what biodiversity means;
 More than half of Australia's land is now classified as degraded or in need of repair;
 Dryland salinity, as a result of tree clearing, is now estimated to spread to 15 million hectares of land in the next 20 years rendering these areas unusable.

The Greening Australia vision is for a non-government organisation, apolitical and equipped with practical knowledge which would help bring about a cultural change in which Australia's native landscapes were highly valued and managed with knowledge and respect.
