Muru Mittigar Aboriginal Cultural & Education Centre

 This organisation accepts volunteer labour

Muru Mittigar has as its major activity the alleviation of poverty amongst the Darug and wider Aboriginal Community of Greater Western Sydney. This activity seeks to engage long term unemployed members of the Aboriginal community in work, providing accredited training and access to counselling in a supportive culturally sensitive environment with an atmosphere of zero tolerance to drug and alcohol abuse.

Muru Mittigar offers Cultural Education to school groups from the Greater Western Sydney. The Cultural Education offered reflects our commitment to raising the level of awareness of Darug culture primarily, but also encouraging an awareness of the importance of Aboriginal Culture, not only to the Cultural Group, but the knowledge of country and awareness of impact on your surroundings that is an integral part of Aboriginal Culture which could benefit the entire populace and its environment. Listening carefully to the Cultural message will guide us as a society through the environmental quagmire we have created by ignoring lessons we could have learned much earlier from the Traditional landholders.

Muru Mittigar facilities include a Retail Gallery and Indigenous Caf. Through the linkages we have with local high schools, these facilities provide a training environment for High School age Indigenous kids to supplement in class learning and provide an atmosphere to facilitate the completion of studies. The Retail Gallery purchases and on-sells Arts and Crafts that have been created by Indigenous Artists living in Greater Western Sydney, generating a further $60,000 in income for the families of Indigenous Artists in Western Sydney.

Muru Mittigar offers Community Employment Programmes. These programmes are linked to the Centres overall Objects and to the Key environmental Performance Indicators taken from the Catchment Management Blueprint for the Lower Hawkesbury Nepean.
