Menzies Centre for Population Health Research
The Menzies Centre, based in Hobart, Tasmania, is one of the world's leading epidemiological research institutes. It specialises in population health research and has gained international recognition for groundbreaking work on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
The Centre collects information from the Tasmanian population about disease, then attempts to define what it is that distinguishes those who become sick from those who do not, and to obtain information on what influences survival from particular diseases.
The Centre's research is currently focussed on the following areas:
* investigating the genetic basis for diseases including glaucoma, osteoarthritis and multiple sclerosis;
* expanding programs on infant and childhood diseases, such as asthma, allergies and hypertension;
* continuing work in the area of nutrition and cardiovascular disease;
* prevention of certain cancers, including, lung, breast and prostate cancer and melanoma;
* continuing research into the prevention of Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus;
* developing a program of musculo-skeletal research including bone density in children and osteoporosis in adults.
The World Health Organisation has designated the Menzies Centre as a key research body for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
