Children's Medical Research Institute
The Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI) offers an approach to research unique in Australia. While some research programs specialise in scientific investigation into specific diseases, the CMRI focuses exclusively on fundamental research into human development itself.
This involves the study of the progressive changes in our body cells from the time of conception, when the genetic basis for our biological future is determined. So, it is here, in these early moments in the very beginning of life, that we focus our scientific investigations. For it is during early development that faults may occur - faults which are either imprinted genetically within the cell, or which occur as the result of environmental hazards.
If a small problem could be detected at this stage, it could be prevented from becoming a big problem.
In the end, the singular aim of research undertaken by the CMRI is to advance prevention and treatment of many diseases which rob children of the healthy life that should be their birthright.
However, while many of the more obvious complications resulting from abnormal development are evident at birth and during childhood, some diseases which also affect adults, such as cancer and vascular diseases, have similar basic origins. In this way, our research has enormous implications for the future health care of every man, woman and child in the nation.
The Children's Medical Research Institute is part of a worldwide scientific community working in partnership with the same vision of better health for all children. We've come a long way - but there's still a long way to go.
