Anti-Cancer Foundation SA
The Anti-Cancer Foundation of South Australia is a non-government organisation which began in 1928 with a bequest dedicated to increasing scientific understanding and public knowledge of cancer.
The Foundation depends largely on the generosity of South Australians to maintain its activities which aim to meet community needs. Our mission is to reduce the impact of cancer through education and awareness, cancer prevention and early detection, support for people with cancer and their families, research and advocacy and the provision of evidence-based treatment advice.
The Foundation is the largest SA supporter of cancer research and offers services aimed at reducing tobacco smoking, promoting sun protection, improving diet, increasing community participation in screening and providing information about emerging cancer prevention and detection issues.
We operate a Cancer Help-Line which receives around 7,500 calls or visits per year, Greenhill Lodge accommodation for country cancer patients and offer financial assistance for people dealing with a cancer diagnosis.
Cancer is a national health priority in Australia. Moreover, it is becoming a more pressing health challenge as the population gets older and consequently more cancer prone. Although about one in three South Australians experience a cancer in their lifetime, prevention can be achieved and cure through treatment has become more common, especially when the cancer is detected early.
Progress is being made but further gains can be achieved through;research, particularly in the field of cancer genetics, health promotion and the provision of support services.
