4032 The mission of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation(JDRF) is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications.
Juvenile diabetes is caused by an autoimmune destruction of insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas and is the most prevalent chronic disease of childhood. The daily regime for children (and adults) with type 1 includes testing blood glucose levels up to 10-12 times per day and 4-6 daily injections of insulin just to stay alive. Children with diabetes also live with the fear of complications including blindness, heart attack, kidney failure and amputation.
In the year ending 30 June 2001, JDRF invested a record $6.4m in Australian research. This year we have committed to funding nearly $10m of Australian research. JDRF does not receive direct government funding and relies on our Walk to Cure Diabetes program and private donations to continue the funding required.
