Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of South Australia Incorporated

 This organisation accepts volunteer labour

The Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Association of SA was started as a parent support group in 1965 and today provides information, support, an outreach nursing service, specialised employment services, social activities and counselling.

What is Spina Bifida? Spina Bifida means split spine and is the most complex of the congenital disabilities. Spina Bifida results from a failure of the spinal cord to develop within the first month of pregnancy. In South Australia spina bifida occurs, on average, once in every 500 conceptions. The effects can include a lack of sensation and muscle function in the lower body and legs, problems with bladder and bowel function, joint abnormalities and deformities of the back. Approximately 90% of people with spina bifida also suffer from hydrocephalus (commonly known as water on the brain), which is now treated by the insertion of a "shunt" into the brain. In addition, over 80% of adults need to use a wheelchair to maintain mobility. It is known through medical research, that 5% of the population have some form of spina bifida.

Services of the Association include our unique outreach nursing service to people with spina bifida. Outreach nursing staff visit people in their homes and attend to a wide range of problems, such as continence issues and pressure sores. Our staff also work at reducing social isolation and introducing people to recreation and employment opportunities.
