The Multiple Sclerosis Society of Western Australia (Inc.)
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS is a disease of the brain and the spinal cord.
It is the most common chronic neurological condition affecting young Australian adults.
Multiple sclerosis occurs when, for reasons unknown, the myelin sheath covering the nerves degenerates and is not replaced.
Myelin normally covers the nerves, protecting them and aiding in the conduction of electrical impulses. Without myelin, electrical impulses travelling along a nerve a slowed, distorted or completely stopped.
The cause of multiple sclerosis is not known, there is no way to prevent it and it has no cure..yet!
