Brotherhood of St Laurence
The Brotherhood of St Laurence is a welfare agency in Melbourne, Australia tackling the causes and effects of poverty by providing practical services and advocating through independent research, policy development and social action. Established in 1933 by Fr Gerard Tucker, the Brotherhood has retained its original purpose, centred in the need to create social change in Australia to end injustice, and increase community awareness about the nature of poverty.
The Brotherhood runs a diverse range of innovative programs in Employment Services, Aged and Community Care, and Community Development. It also has a Social Action and Research Department, and it is a source of credible and authoritative information for academics, students and the wider community. The organisation seeks to identify and address the causes of poverty and social injustice in Australia, so that it may initiate community-based programs for those most in need, while instituting long-term, meaningful change.
