Mental Health Research Institute
The Mental Health Research Institute (MHRI) was established as a specialist arm of the Victorian Health Department in 1956. In the mid-1980s, with the explosion in the neurosciences, the focus of research at the MHRI shifted to the neurobiology of mental illness and in 1987 the Institute was incorporated and became an independent research organisation.
THE INSTITUTE TODAY
Today the MHRI is Australia's largest dedicated psychiatric research centre. Based in Parkville,Melbourne Australia. Over 100 staff and collaborators focus their collective expertise on advancing our understanding of the nature and origins of psychiatric diseases and brain-related processes. Our goal is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and ultimately to develop preventive measures and cures.
The MHRI has one of the leading programs of its type internationally. The Institute's principal strengths are in Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia and depressive illnesses. These diverse disorders are investigated by researchers from a spectrum of relevant disciplines including psychiatry, psychology, molecular neurobiology, neurogenetics, neurochemistry, biostatistics and epidemiology.
The MHRI is formally affiliated with both Melbourne and Monash Universities and the Royal Melbourne Hospital and has a broad network of linkages to other research and clinical sites. The Institute also serves as the hub of the nationwide Network for Brain Research into Mental Disorders which brings together more than 90 researchers from 30 centres throughout Australia.
The State and Commonwealth Governments remain our primary source of funding. The Institute attracts competitive research funds as well as donations from corporations, charitable trusts and foundations and individuals.
