The Abbeyfield Society (Australia) Ltd.
Abbeyfield Australia assists community groups to develop and maintain supportive group houses for older people. The Abbeyfield organisation developed in the 1950's in the UK. It has now spread to many countries. The Abbeyfield model provides quality, affordable, accommodation for up to ten, usually low income, residents. Each house (there are 22 in Australia) is managed by a committee of management made up of local volunteers. The committee hires and supervises the employment of a housekeeper who does the shopping, prepares the two main meals of the day and cleans the shared areas of the house. Each resident has a bedsitting room with ensuite, which they furnish themselves. Residents are responsible for getting their own breakfast (from household supplies), doing their laundry, cleaning their room and their own personal hygiene. The model provides a level of support but encourages residents to achieve their maximum independence.
