The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital
The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital 2003 Profile
The Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital, a state-wide teaching, training and research hospital specialising in eye, ear, nose and throat medicine, has been serving Victorians for 139 years. It is one of only a dozen major specialist eye and ear hospitals around the world.
Our mission is to provide world class eye and ear, nose and throat health care, in conjunction with the Victorian community, which is safe, effective, consumer focused and strongly influenced by research and teaching. We operate under the Health Services (Governance) Act 2000 and are overseen by a Board of Directors appointed by the Governor in Council, on the recommendation of the Minister for Health.
One of Victorias largest hospitals (in terms of patient appointments), we perform half of the States public general eye surgery, up to 90% of special eye surgery, and almost all of Victorias Cochlear implant surgery (114 implants in 2001/02).
In 2001/02, we provided 228,047 occasions of service to patients, of which 182,717 were delivered in the Hospitals outpatient clinics (medical and allied health) and 45,330 in Emergency. We also admitted 12,586 people as inpatients. This represents more occasions of service, in all areas, than in 2000/01.
Apart from its East Melbourne base, the Hospital has three satellite services: eye surgery and consultation services at Maroondah Hospital, in Ringwood, and at Broadmeadows Health Service; and a paediatric ear clinic at Taralye, Advisory Council for Children with Impaired Hearing (Victoria), in Blackburn.
To service regional Victoria, we send staff to regional health services and are involved in jointly appointing medical staff across Victoria.
Teaching & Research
The Hospitals national and international reputation is underpinned by the excellence of its research.
Through our association with the University of Melbourne Departments of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, both based in the Hospital, we are able to remain at the forefront of teaching and research in these specialty areas. University and Hospital staff members are involved in developing and assessing new forms of treatment and determining the value of new drugs and techniques developed overseas. We also work closely with the Centre for Eye Research Australia, the Bionic Ear Institute and the Human Communication Research Centre.
During 2001/02, staff members across the Hospital were involved in 137 research projects spanning eye and ear, nose and throat research. More details about the Hospitals research program can be found in our Research Report 2002.
In conjunction with Melbournes leading universities, we teach and train:
 Undergraduate Medical, Orthoptic and Optometry students;
 Postgraduate Nursing (internal certificate) students;
 Postgraduate Optometry students;
 Postgraduate Ophthalmology, Ear, Nose & Throat, and Anaesthetic students; and
 Limited Emergency Medicine students.
Fundraising
The Hospital is grateful for the support and generosity of its volunteers and the wider hospital community. Through the activities of The Friends of the Eye & Ear Hospital as well as through community donations, bequests, and trust and foundation giving, we have received much needed financial support for our research and training activities, the modernisation of clinical equipment and the greater enhancement of our facilities for patients and visitors. In 2001/02, the Hospital received a total of nearly $1.3 million from its friends and supporters.
