The Spastic Centre of the ACT
Since its establishment in 1945 by Neil and Audrie McLeod (parents of child with cerebral palsy), The Spastic Centre has grown to become the largest provider of services, information and supports for people with cerebral palsy in NSW and the ACT requiring $37.5 million each year to operate. It is now one of the oldest organisations of its type in the world and is at the forefront of service responsiveness and innovation.
With its mission To support people with cerebral palsy and their families in the community, The Spastic Centre annually assists over 2700 families and their children with a range of direct services delivered across its 66 service sites within NSW and ACT. It currently offers a comprehensive range of services and supports for all age groups including: early childhood intervention services, conductive education, therapy, equipment/technology, accommodation support, respite care, employment opportunities and supports and community and recreational activities for people with high support needs who are unable to work.
Additionally, The Spastic Centre actively works to extend its reach beyond this to ensure other services are available in the community to support families and people with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is one of the most common childhood disabilities and its impact for the child, adult and family is lifelong. There is no known single cause or cure. The Spastic Centre's future relies in its continued ability to positively influence and inform the actions, policies and attitudes of government, business and the community about the needs of people with cerebral palsy.
