The Teddy Bear Project
The Teddy Bear Project is a non-profit organisation and approved charity that works to assist the recovery of Adults suffering the long term effects of Childhood Sexual Assault and bring public attention to the prevelance of child abuse.
Established in 1997 in Michigan U.S.A the American Teddy Bear Project inspired the establishment of The Teddy Bear Project Australia in 2004.
Through fundraising events and the generosity of the community The Teddy Bear Project is able to facilitate the recovery of Adult Survivors suffering from the ongoing effects of abuse such as; depression, anxiety, eating disorders, poor self image, dissosociative disorders and suicide in the form of Therapy/Counselling grants.
This years first fundraising event is "BREAKING THE SILENCE" a Charity Concert to be held at Western Suburbs Leagues Club 17th April 2005. This event will feature the unveiling of "THE TEDDY BEAR PROJECT Display" The Teddy Bears in the display are being donated by survivors all over the country with each bear in the display representing a child who was abused or exploited, each bear with wings representing someone who lost their life directly or indirectly (for example, through suicide) as a result of the abuse.
We believe that renewed attention is important for adult survivors of Childhood Sexual Assault. Many face enormous challenges in getting appropriate and affordable mental health care. The Teddy Bear Project seeks to allow survivors of childhood sexual assault an avenue in which to safely speak out and honor the strength and resilience it took for them to survive and provide healing options to those in need.
