St David's Uniting Church, Canterbury
St David��s had identified its purpose as the development of Christian faith of its members and its local community. Further, St David��s does this by:
- Offering a Supportive Community
- Challenging the Mind
- Nurturing the Soul
- Cherishing All People
This is not an idle statement of purpose. It, as any purpose should, has come to define how we undertake our ministry.
We identify ourselves as a Habitat for Spirituality. This means we must be a place where people can ��take the next growth step�� in their Christian spiritual life. After all, a habitat is a place of growth.
The process of growth, also known as our model of community development, is called Community Interaction Ministry. It takes people on a journey from community member through to mission worker AND of course it mirrors our purpose.
The steps are:
�h Affirmation: this is the process of ��Offering a Supportive Community�� so that people feel they are respected and loved; that they are given a sense of security not found in material things.
�h Information: this is the process of ��Challenging the Mind�� with a progressive Christian message that provides the basis for an assured but inquisitive Christian faith.
�h Inspiration: this is the process of ��Nurturing the Soul��, taking people to the next level of spiritual development by helping people find the ��heart and soul�� which balances the ��head.�� This process uses beauty in liturgy, poetry, meditation and effective prayer and the arts to stimulate the faith-longings of the right brain.
�h Connection: this is the process which challenges people, with a deeper sense of faith, to ��Cherish All People.�� This is the process where our faith sends us into the World to risk living like Jesus and to demonstrate the great love of God.
Of course our development in each of these steps will often not occur linearly. We will develop some steps in parallel with others and continue cycling through the steps year after year as we grow in faith. St David��s vision is to be there to keep people equipped at each step and keep them growing �V to keep being a Habitat!
