East Sydney High School
East Sydney High is a community-based school that has been operating in Darlinghurst since 1976.
The school offers Years 9 and 10 to applicants from all areas of Sydney
The school caters solely for young people who have experienced difficulty in accessing mainstream education. We offer an opportunity for our students to complete a basic education to School Certificate level.
Services Provided :
Educational : Students can access East Sydney High as a registered school where they can complete the School Certificate course. Students frequently take 2 years to complete Year 10, each progressing according to their ability to engage with the education process.
Welfare : Substantial assistance is given to students with welfare matters that impact upon their ability to access education. These include : physical and mental health, accommodation, legal and criminal matters, drug and alcohol issues, Centrelink benefits and employment.
Keyworker Program : East Sydney High sees its primary task as the re-engagement of youth at risk of not completing their basic education. As part of the Keyworker Program, each student is assigned a keyworker who can assist with educational, personal and welfare issues that affect their ability to access education.
Interagency Affiliations : The school offers an outreach service and regularly interacts with :
* medical centres and hospitals
* refuges and accommodation services
* Centrelink, financial institutions and potential employers
* legal centres, The Juvenile Justice dept. and the court system.
Transition Program : To facilitate students re-entry into further education and training or employment, the school incorporates a work experience component and visits to suitable agencies such as:
* mainstream and senior high schools/colleges
* TAFE
* The Career Reference Centre

- Keyworker Project - 2-JAN-2010 to 31-DEC-2025
All students are allocated a Key Worker on the staff team as part of the East Sydney High Mentoring Program.
The Key Worker assists in accommodation, health education, legal and welfare matters as well as acting in a mentoring role for the student.
The Mentoring Program is an integral part of the model which the East Sydney High employs in removing the obstacles which stand between these young people and their ability to become functioning and contributing members of society.
Each new start is given a staff key worker whose first task is to engage the student with the East Sydney High. Throughout their time at the School the Key Worker assists and supports the young person and this service is available even after the student is no longer enrolled at the school. Some ex-students continue to access the service and the support we offer, years after their period of enrolment. This Program is unique to the East Sydney High and greatly assists those at risk.
Whilst we are officially an independent school, fees are a token amount ( $50 ) and are waived in the event of hardship. This ensures open access for our target group. Income from fees is minimal. Typically fees income is less than $500.
As far as we know, the East Sydney High is the only independent school of its kind in which students at risk make up the entire school population.
